Exactly one year ago, if you told me you shopped at Whole Foods I immediately wrote you off, placed you in a mental manila envelope, and filed you away in the “Douche” cabinet of my brain along with Ryan Lochte and other wannabes.
However as of late, I can’t get a week’s worth of groceries without a trip to WF. I was a total poser when I first started shopping there (and those people can TELL you don’t belong. I swear they can smell it on you…more on this later). I bought everything without reading the labels, and was somehow surprised when some of the bread tasted like paper or the fish was too fishy and less covered in the salty fat I’m accustomed to. To make matters worse, all of it was priced insanely high so I didn’t understand why people would pay that much for papery bread unless, like the prices, they were high as well.
The key to healthy/smart grocery shopping is something I learned after way too many dollars spent. You have to learn what is worth it, and what you can buy cheaper and better tasting at a Kroger/Pick’n’Save/Woodman’s. I’m posting some of my foodie favorites to give you One More Thing to try so you don’t make the same mistakes I did. I wish I would have had something like this when I first started shopping there, so hopefully you can get something from it. If nothing else, just buy the yogurt covered raisins, ok?

If you want to try some Whole Foods delights, but are afraid of completely turning into a Granola, try some of these! Now before you go all crazy, some of those Whole Foods items are expensive. I choose to cut out a lot of junk food so I can spring for my favorite (pricier) drinks and snacks. I have two cardinal rules for buying food and they are 1. If it tastes almost the same, buy the cheaper one and 2. If you love it, cut something else out so you can afford it.
Obviously all of this information is subjective to my personal taste, but I promise you I wouldn’t post something if I didn’t love it. As a disclaimer, I need to tell you that I maybe almost definitely lied in the above lists. While I promise I regularly buy all of those items, I did leave out a few. Could be water, could be hummus, could be a 6 pack of chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate cream cheese frosting and chocolate sprinkes, but that’s something you’ll never know.
Did you try any of these? Do you have any favorite foods that didn’t make my list? Tell me!
